It is the only art in which I currently hold a Dan rank, and it was Kendo that instilled in me the fundamental principles and mindset of Budo that I carried into practicing other martial arts later on. To this day, I watch the national Kendo championships on TV and enjoy reading the monthly Kendo magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I greatly appreciate that Kendo, <strong>despite<\/strong> its large number of practitioners, has maintained its Budo philosophy, preventing it from being reduced <strong>in spirit<\/strong> by <strong>being<\/strong> purely a sport. It should absolutely never be included in the Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That aside, there is one teaching I received from my very first Kendo master\u2014my original Budo mentor\u2014that I still hold close to my heart. That teaching is, &#8220;<strong>Aim for the Men<\/strong>.&#8221; <strong>&#8220;Kote, Do, or Tsuki is not enough; just &#8216;get Men&#8217;,&#8221; he always said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Kendo were treated purely as a sport, a win would be a win, regardless of the technique <strong>(Kimarite)<\/strong> used, whether it was a Kote (wrist), a Tsuki (thrust), or a Do (torso). However, my Kendo teacher always taught me to take Men. He didn&#8217;t <strong>explain it in great detail<\/strong>, but I deeply understood and remembered the lesson as the principle of Budo and Life. I now think it is a kind of <strong>due diligence<\/strong>; <strong>taking the right step is essential, not just a win.<\/strong> To get Men <strong>requires<\/strong> taking more risk than other techniques, particularly Kote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I always took great effort to get a Men in front of my master. He praised me when I got Men even when I lost the match. The speed of my Kendo progress was amazing <strong>thanks to<\/strong> the master&#8217;s teaching, and I was able to <strong>achieve a Dan rank<\/strong> at the earliest timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I now often remember his lesson also at the timings of <strong>challenging<\/strong> times, including work and private life. The lesson always encourages me to take the right step, even though the step seems to be more difficult. The lesson has <strong>guided<\/strong> me for a long time. Now I&#8217;m trying a
